CELPIP vs IELTS Test

Overview

Are you planning to start your study abroad journey to Canada? If yes, then it is vital to prove language proficiency in English to enroll in Canadian universities.

In order to prove English language proficiency, students have two options, i.e., IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program). Now, the biggest confusion that students face in navigating the process to study in Canada is choosing CELPIP vs IELTS. Therefore, in this blog, let’s explore the difference between CELPIP and IELTS and know which is better for you!

CELPIP Vs IELTS: What are they?

IELTS and CELPIP are both designed to assess test-takers' English language skills. The assessments are divided into four areas that cover the most important components of the language: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

However, the CELPIP test is created explicitly to assess key language abilities required for permanent residency and citizenship in Canada. The test is written in Canadian English and permits spellings in both British and American English. The CELPIP-General Training (four-skills exams) is required if you are taking CELPIP to apply through Express Entry.

On the other hand, IELTS is used for education, employment, and immigration. It recognises both British and American English for spelling, word choice, and grammar, and employs a variety of native speaker accents throughout the test. IELTS is offered in over 140 countries and is separated into two sections: IELTS Academic (for education) and IELTS General Training (for migration to an English-speaking nation). The IELTS General Training test is essential if you are taking IELTS to apply through Express Entry.

CELPIP Vs IELTS for Canada PR: Which is the Better Option?

CELPIP and IELTS are accepted for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) applications. Neither is inherently better than the other; it often comes down to your personal preference and which test format you find more comfortable.

Consider factors like test format, test centres, and your language skills when making a choice. Some people find one test more suitable for their strengths and needs than the other. It's a good idea to review the specific language requirements for your PR program to make an informed decision.

Is IELTS better than CELPIP?

Although CELPIP is an excellent option for students seeking visas to migrate to Canada, IELTS may be a better option for them for a variety of reasons:

  • IELTS offers both paper-based and online test options. This is especially beneficial for students who are unsure about taking online tests.

  • IELTS has a greater number of test centres worldwide. Furthermore, given the wide number of IELTS centres, students may feel more confident in contacting someone with questions concerning IELTS.

IELTS is a globally renowned exam, but CELPIP is a modern exam solely accepted in Canada. Therefore, unlike CELPIP, the score of IELTS will be valid for admission to universities in other countries like the UK, the USA, and Australia.

Is CELPIP better than IELTS?

Although CELPIP is a Canadian exam, taking it will not make it easier for you to gain admission to Canadian institutions and colleges. However, there are several benefits of CELPIP:

  • Unlike the IELTS, this test is for Canadian immigration. As a result, CELPIP assesses your English in accordance with the English language used in Canada.

  • Employers may be more willing to accept CELPIP scores because they demonstrate your ability to use Canadian English.

  • Canada is one of the top countries in the world to study abroad. When you begin studying and living in Canada, you must grasp how the locals communicate. As a result, administering an exam that is more focused on Canadian English makes more sense.

  • The CELPIP test is administered by computer, making it more current and accessible from anywhere.

  • CELPIP results are available within 5 days of the test date. Whereas you can have your results in only three days if you use the 'Express Rating' option.

  • Unlike IELTS, the entire test is performed in one session.

  • The CELPIP charge is slightly lower than the IELTS fee.

Conclusion

To conclude, choosing between the CELPIP and IELTS English proficiency tests depends on your individual needs and preferences. CELPIP may be more convenient for those comfortable with computer-based testing, while IELTS offers a traditional paper-based option. Your choice should consider factors such as the purpose of the test, your comfort with various test formats, and the requirements of the institutions you are applying to. So, choose the test that aligns with your goals and prepare diligently to showcase your English proficiency.

FAQs

There is no proof that CELPIP is more difficult than IELTS or vice versa. However, it is dependent on the test-taker. Some people may believe CELPIP is more difficult because it occurs all in one day. Others may believe IELTS is easier and safer because it is a much more popular and older exam.

Any score between 6.5 and 9 bands is considered a good IELTS score to enroll in a Canadian university.

No, students are not allowed to take CELPIP tests at home. Students have to choose one of the test centres in India to appear for the test.

The minimum score required for express entry is 7 points in each exam category. However, the score varies depending on what you need.

Any score in the range of 8 and 12, as per the CELPIP levels, is a good score.
