The UN has rightly described tourism as a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon that requires people to move from foreign countries or places outside of their usual environment to travel for pleasure or business. Likewise, I once travelled to a beautiful city in India called Amritsar.

Where is the city?

Amritsar is situated in the Indian state of Punjab.

How did you know the city?

I am an Indian citizen, so from an early age in our schools, we are taught about the states, famous cities, famous monuments, holy places in India and much more. Hence, I even got to know about Amritsar and its important places.

What buildings does the city have?

The city has many buildings, such as the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Akal Takht, Partition Museum, and Wagah Border.  

What is it famous for?

The main attractions in Amritsar are the Golden Temple and the Jallianwala Bagh, each with its own significance. The city is also famous for its rich and delicious food and has some famous places a person should definitely visit, like Kesar Da Dhaba. Amritsar is also known for its Amritsari Kulcha, which are stuffed parathas and well-known delicacies throughout Punjab. 

Why do you think this city is beautiful?

The city is beautiful because it is a compilation of art, history, and culture. Along with its prominent history, the city has mouthwatering food and a pious place like the Golden Temple.  

Conclusion 

To conclude, India is filled with various cities, each with its own attraction points, but Amritsar has always stood out for me and has become my favourite immediately.

India is a country with the most art, culture, and history compared to other countries. Many cities in the country have different significance; some places are known for their beauty, whereas others are known for their pious places and much more. Similarly, today I am going to talk about one of my favourite cities, Mysore(Karnataka).

Where is the city?

Mysore is located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka below Chamundi Hills. It is the southernmost city of Karnataka, which has neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh.

How did you know the city?

My maternal aunt used to live in Chennai and heard many good things about the city, so we planned a holiday there. The moment I started sightseeing, I fell in love with the place.

What buildings does the city have?

The city of Mysore is filled with places to visit and various worthwhile buildings to go like the Mysore Palace, Brindavan Gardens, Shri Chamundeshwari Temple, St. Philomena's Cathedral, Jaganmohan Palace Art Gallery and Auditorium, Folk-Lore Museum Mysore, Melody World Wax Museum, and many other places, the city is full of it. 

What is it famous for?

Mysore is a city rich in culture and architecture, but it is largely famous for sandalwood and rosewood artefacts, stone sculptures, incense sticks, inlay work with ivory and its exquisite silk sarees.

Why do you think this city is beautiful?

I think the city is beautiful because firstly, it has many places for tourists to visit and secondly, it has a lot to offer in terms of culture, history, authenticity, and whatnot. The city has beautifully embraced its history and depicted it for everyone. 

Conclusion 

To conclude, I never thought that a South Indian city or state would become one of my favourites, but I was proven wrong by how beautiful and organised everything was in Mysore.

Question- Why do some people like to visit historical places?

Answer- Because historical sites provide a window into the past and educate tourists about other cultures and civilisations, certain individuals are drawn to them. For those interested in history, going to historical places offers a concrete means of connecting to significant historical events and personalities. Furthermore, historical sites frequently contain architectural wonders and relics that highlight the creativity and skill of past eras.

Question- What can we do to stop visitors from damaging historical places?

Answer- Regulators can impose stringent rules and standards such as bans on graffiti, littering, and handling fragile items, to deter tourists from damaging historical sites. Signage and educational initiatives can also help spread the word about how important it is to protect these locations for coming generations. Historic sites may continue to be enjoyed by tourists and stay in good shape with regular maintenance and restoration work.

Question- What are the problems caused in maintaining historical cities?

Answer- Given the city's ageing infrastructure and the requirement for preservation initiatives, historical city maintenance might present difficulties. Problems such as urban congestion, environmental degradation, and structural decay frequently require large restoration projects and financial outlays. Conflicts and arguments among stakeholders may also arise from trying to balance the demands of contemporary development and the preservation of historical authenticity. However, proactive planning, environmentally friendly methods, and community engagement can assist in resolving these problems and guaranteeing historical cities' long-term viability.

Question- What are the differences between modern towns and modern cities?

Answer- Compared to contemporary cities, modern towns are usually smaller in area and population. They frequently emphasise communal living and a slower pace of life, with fewer infrastructure and services. On the other hand,  modern cities are more expansive metropolitan centres with a wide range of services, a fast-paced lifestyle, and a lot of infrastructure. These features draw in a bigger population and provide more options for leisure and work.

Question- According to you, do you think too many visitors to historical sites is a good thing?

Answer- In my opinion, tourism is essential for the growth of the country and the city. It attracts healthy traffic and contributes to bettering the economy. On the other hand, it is essential to consider that many people do not value heritage and try to destroy it. In various instances, people tend to destroy public property by spitting or carving their names.

Conclusion

‘Describe a beautiful city’ is an IELTS speaking cue card topic which can be answered properly if you have visited a particular city. These are some of the topics that you cannot answer hypothetically.
