Hence, today, through this blog, we are covering a significant part of the speaking section in IELTS, which consists of cue cards.
In this blog, you will get a few sample answers to one of the most asked cue card topics: “Describe a female leader you like”, along with some follow-up questions. So, without any more thought, let’s start!
As an Indian, I am extremely proud to state that our history is evidence of various female protagonists who played a vital role and were remarkable leaders. Today, I want to discuss one such female leader of India who has greatly motivated me and whom I admire a lot.
The woman I am talking about is Maneka Gandhi, a former Indian politician, an animal rights activist, and environmentalist. She was a member of the Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian parliament) and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
She is from a Sikh family and is mainly from Delhi. She is born into an army family and later married Sanjay Gandhi.
She was the first person to advocate for human personal rights, even during an emergency. She advocated for personal liberty and took the matter to the Supreme Court of India, which later became the landmark judgement for the coming years. She is also an environmentalist and has been actively working for the rights of animals. She also held the cabinet for the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2014 during the government of Narendra Modi.
As a law student, personal rights and the importance of fundamental rights matter to me; when I first read the landmark judgement of Maneka Gandhi vs Union of India, that is when I understood how strongly she stood for her rights and opened a pathway for other citizens of India as well. This is when I started reading more of her work and started liking her.
To conclude, the most prominent thing about Maneka Gandhi that made me like her was her will to fight against the government for her fundamental rights; this kind of courage encourages me as a citizen to stand by the rights and fight for the same.

The world has a plethora of women leaders, but they have been neglected in front of the men leaders. Acknowledging the work of women leaders is essential. Hence, today, I will talk about a female leader who has done exceptional work for the world.
I am mentioning Michelle Obama. She is an American attorney and an author who worked as the First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017.
She is from Chicago, Illinois. Her father was a city water plant employee, and her mother was a homemaker until she entered high school. Later, she married Barak Obama, the first African-American President of the States.
Before becoming the First Lady of the States, Michelle Obama was an associate in a leading law firm and has always been interested in working for the community. She held the designation of the public sector in the Chicago city government and worked for the planning and development. She also became an active member of an NGO that worked on social issues; as a black woman, she knew of people’s hardships.
I like Michelle Obama because she is a successful attorney who has always worked to improve society. Her most admirable quality is that she had a whole career figured out for herself before becoming the First Lady. Even though people started recognising her because of her designation as the First Lady, she has been a strong woman, having completed her studies at the most prestigious colleges in the world and advocating for the right things.
To conclude, I admire Michelle Obama because even before she was associated with the name Obama, she was a strong lady with clear perspectives and a headstrong personality.

While talking about leadership in India, the first woman who comes to my head straight away is a person who has opened many doors for women in India and set an example for them. She came into power when it was unheard of. Today, I will discuss why I like and adore this lady.
Kiran Bedi is the woman I am talking about. In 1972, she became the first woman in India to hold the rank of officer in the Indian Police Service. She also served as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and held the office for five years.
Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Kiran Bedi belongs to a business family. She is raised with Hindu and Sikh traditions and married Brij Bedi.
Kiran Bedi had a dynamic career in which she worked for the betterment of the people. She was one of the few officers who had the courage to work against the influential people of the government. She had several postings, each posting wherein she took terrific steps to safeguard the rights, peace, and harmony of the people involved. She had an active role in the Wadhwa Commission, after which she was transferred to Mizoram, where she worked against the issue of addiction. Like these, during her entire career, she was a part of many major projects, including the reforms at Tihar.
I like her because, firstly, she was the first lady IPS officer India ever had. After securing the designation, she worked for all the right purposes and supported her team like a true leader. She always stood for the right irrespective of the opponent, and without any fear, she led a team of men in the police department.
To conclude, I admire Kiran Bedi for her courage and for paving the way for young girls. Also, she stood with the right her whole career, but due to this, she had to face a lot of setbacks, which did not deter her from her goal and objective towards society.
Question- What is a leader?
Answer- A true leader is someone who can plan, lead, and motivate people. This is the individual who, in a difficult situation, doesn't mishandle things but instead assists others and who can make sense of a different way to get things done when everyone else is anxious about the outcome. A leader is someone who not only takes the lead but also brings people together and encourages them to do their best.
Question- Who are the first leaders who come to your mind?
Answer- Though I'm not very interested in politics, I know many prominent people nationally and worldwide, like Margaret Thatcher, Adolf Hitler, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, and Jawaharlal Nehru. When I hear the word chief, these are some of the leaders that come to mind.
Question- What makes those people great leaders?
Answer- They are excellent leaders because of their will, determination, consideration, affection, and never-give-up attitude. These are the people who think about other people before themselves.
Question- If you were the leader of your school, what changes would you make?
Answer- There are only a few things that, if I were the school's leader, I might wish to alter. Penalties is one of them. I understand that using punishment as a teaching tool is exceptional. However, I also acknowledge that a small incentive is never a bad thing. There should also be more parent-teacher meetings. This way, parents and teachers can work towards the betterment of the child.
