Overview

There have been many instances where I have lost my way home. But there is one particular incident that I’ll never forget, and I am going to explain that here. 

When and where did it happen?

I was hiking in a deep forest with some buddies when I had an unforgettable experience: We lost our way. We had never been on this new route before, so we were trying to figure it out. Everything went smoothly until we made a mistake and got lost in the large forest.  

How did you feel when you were lost?

When we first started walking back, we were sure we would find our way. But as time went on and the dense forest appeared to go on forever, we started to feel scared and powerless. It was frightening and confusing to realise that we were lost and had no recognisable landmarks or signals to help us. We experienced conflicting feelings, including helplessness, annoyance, and vulnerability to the elements. 

How did you find your way out?

We had no choice but to stay together and search for any indications of human habitation or a well-traveled route. After what seemed like hours of wandering, we finally found a little clearing with a campground. We spoke with the amiable campers, who told us how to return to the main root. They graciously led us back to the beginning so we could resume our walk and eventually return to safety. 

Conclusion

Overall, this incident taught me how important it is to remain composed under pressure and ask for assistance when necessary. It also helped me understand how important it is to properly plan and prepare before going on outdoor activities.

Overview

To be completely honest, I am very bad at figuring out the directions, so I do get lost quite often. 

When and where did it happen?

A few years back, my friends and I organised a weekend trip to Imagica in Mumbai, which is a one-stop adventure destination with a water park, theme park, and snow park for thrill-seekers. When we arrived at the theme park on a Sunday evening, we were astounded by the sheer number of people gathering close to the ticket booth. But since we had pre-purchased our tickets, it wasn't a huge concern.

As soon as we arrived, my buddies and I were entertained by Imagica's enormous attractions and exhilarating rides. Since there were four of us, we divided into two pairs. A map was also provided so that we could understand the directions. We had been roaming and enjoying rides for three hours and were exhausted and hungry. I thus searched for a restaurant with my partner Visha, but we were unable to locate one. 

How did you feel when you were lost?

We kept looking for the restaurant but could only find amusement parks, gift shops, and apparel stores. Imagica covered around 138 acres, so locating a restaurant or food stand was very challenging. Unfortunately, the GPS could not work for us. We asked other guests for directions, and they helped us continue walking. Our other two buddies didn't know where we were, and we got so lost that we were really perplexed. 

How did you find your way out?

We became lost in Imagica's maze-like pathways. Despite my fear, I didn't want to frighten Visha because she was already a coward. Visha and I reached the exit gate as soon as we saw it, took the direction map from one of the guards, and used it to find a food stand. We returned to our similarly anxious pals after making sure I had asked the attendant where the food stand was located precisely. 

Conclusion

Overall, being lost with my friend was an amazing experience. I also learned how important it is to take care of important things like maps while travelling.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 - Follow Up Questions

Question: Are young people gradually losing their ability to orient themselves?

Answer: Yes, with the invention of the new mapping technologies, young people are gradually losing their ability to orient themselves. Some people follow the directions provided on the maps when they move. However, if they get lost, they use the information stored in their brain to find their way back to their starting point.

Question: Are young people more dependent on their phones than older people to find their way?

Answer: Although cell phones are used by people of all ages these days, younger people are more adept at using them. Using maps might be challenging for elderly individuals, but younger people may use them very easily. Young people now rely more on their phones for navigation or other purposes.

Question: With mobile phones and electronic products that have navigation, is it possible for people to get lost?

Answer: Undoubtedly, maps make it less possible to get distracted, but individuals still get lost occasionally. In fact, there are instances when the applications give erroneous directions, which causes people to get lost while navigating.

Question: Are some people better at orienting themselves?

Answer: Indeed, some individuals follow the rule of direction when they move. They visualise the route they have taken in their minds, and in the event that they become lost, they utilise the stored information to find their way back home.

Question: What kind of problems do old people have when they get lost?

Answer: Older people may have trouble using the newest navigation maps since they are not as accustomed to using technology. However, this is not a major issue in India because the majority of people there are incredibly helpful and provide others with verbal direction when they ask for assistance.

Question: How do people feel when they get lost?

Answer: It really depends on the individual and how they respond to the challenging circumstances. In general, those who are not familiar with technology feel puzzled, and they often have to rely on others around them.

Question: Some people like to walk around without navigation. Is there any problem?

Answer: No, I don't believe it to be a major issue, although it can be a waste of time. We might also go into unsafe locations, but generally speaking, walking without navigation is not that big a problem.
