Describe someone you know who often helps others

Overview

One important way that the IELTS assesses your English language competency and fluency is through the speaking section. A cue card topic is given to you in the speaking section  two minutes to describe it, and one minute to prepare.

One of the common questions in the IELTS speaking section is 'Describe someone you know who often helps others'. This is an opportunity for you to share a personal story or experience. You can talk about anyone you know, whether they are a famous person, a family member, or just someone you admire. The key is to provide a clear introduction, explain your relationship with the person, and give examples of how they help others.

Describe someone you know who often helps others - sample answer 1

Introduction

I can think of many kind individuals who are always willing to help others, no matter the time or place, but I want to talk about one to answer your question perfectly.

Who this person is?

Vivek is the name of the good-hearted individual I will be speaking about. He is my sister’s husband, and he is deeply engrossed in charitable activities. Despite being in his late 30s, he is determined to change the world.

How does this person help others?

He works really hard to assist homeless children, and I like that he used his own funds to start a school where underprivileged children can learn fundamental skills.

How do you feel about this person?

Vivek Jiju is a helping person in general because he has committed his time, money, and effort to help others. We need more kind-hearted individuals like him in the current times, especially when society is facing numerous challenges.

Conclusion

He is an inspiration to his friends and family, and talking about him motivates me to contribute to society as well.

Describe someone you know who often helps others - sample answer 2

Introduction

It is difficult to find people who are willing to help others without expecting anything in return. Today, I would like to talk about a volunteer who works in an NGO to help others in her free time.

Who this person is?

I am talking about Lily, who lives in my neighbourhood. She is beautiful and has a kind heart. Illiteracy is an alarming issue that must be addressed as soon as possible. Lily also has the same agenda and hence works towards it.

How does this person help others?

She not only helps people at NGOs but also offers help to the people who live in shelter homes. After work, on weekends and holidays, she tries to spend as much time as possible educating the underprivileged.

How do you feel about this person?

I am quite proud of this person because she is doing amazing work. Her incredible work for the underprivileged and society has always inspired me.

Conclusion

We need more people like her who act selflessly to help others in need. I have seen her work tirelessly for children, which sets her apart from others.

Describe someone you know who often helps others - sample answer 3

Introduction

Helping others is noble and people find different ways to help others in need. Here, I would like to speak about my friend, who helps animals in peacetime and whenever he sees any needy animal.

Who this person is?

I want to talk about my new friend, Sunil. We met at a social event where he was raising awareness regarding animal welfare.

How does this person help others?

He works with a pet shelter, where he looks after animals who are not treated well by their owners or are left by their owners in case of an infection or disease. He also told me that some pets in their shelter home tend to be severely ill, and they are always ready to treat them.

How do you feel about this person?

His love for pets is incredible. He is willing to help needy pets and continually finds new ways to make a positive impact in the sphere of animal welfare. I was really happy watching him and his team care for the pets.

Conclusion

Selflessness shows that small acts of kindness can significantly impact the lives of others. It reminds us to be more compassionate and extend a helping hand to those in need.

IELTS Speaking part 3 - Follow-up questions

Question: Should kids be taught how to be helpful to others?

Answer: They should; parents need to teach their kids how to help neighbours and family because helping isn't always something that comes naturally to people. Children will find it easy to help others wherever they are, which is beneficial for their social and personal growth. One method for achieving this is to give them household duties. Another is for parents to teach by example by showing how to help people outside the house, like by helping a stranger or a neighbour.

Question: In what kind of professions do people help others more?

Answer: In my opinion, people in all professions assist others through the goods and services they offer, whether directly or indirectly. However, people who work in social service or community service fields, that is, in organisations that support women's empowerment, child education, and other social issues, are more likely to help others.

Question: Why do certain people volunteer worldwide?

Answer: There are various motives behind people's decision to volunteer worldwide. First, volunteering provides an opportunity to widen perspectives, learn new languages, and immerse oneself in diverse cultures. It's a chance to get out of your comfort zone and see the world from a different angle. Second, volunteering enables people to make a meaningful contribution to improving underprivileged areas and promoting sustainable development. Giving back, campaigning for social justice, and striving for a more fair world are all achieved through it.

Question: Do people nowadays help others more than in the past?

Answer: Helping others has always existed; they do whatever it takes to support those in need. Thanks to technology, people can now more easily serve others anywhere in the world, which was not possible in the past.

Question: Why are some people willing to help others?

Answer: People with empathy, sensitivity, and compassion are more inclined to provide a helping hand to others. They witnessed and picked up these values from their parents, teachers, and other adults in their environment as they grew up.
