Describe something that you did with someone/ a group of people

Overview

One of the most important components of the IELTS exam is the speaking portion, which evaluates candidates' English language skills. It is divided into three sections, each of which assesses the candidate's proficiency in English communication. In Part 1, the candidate is questioned generally about their background, interests, and self. The candidate are given a cue card with a topic to talk about for up to two minutes during Part 2. The candidate is requested to address additional queries about the subject covered in Part 2 in Part 3.

In this blog, we have presented sample answers and follow-up questions to a popular cue card topic, “Describe something that you did with someone/ a group of people”, to give you an insight into the cue card section of the IELTS speaking test.

Describe something that you did with someone/ a group of people - sample answer 1

Overview

Participating in an activity with others can be a lot of fun. Collaborating on a task, project, or activity can yield positive outcomes when done well. It is also a fantastic way to develop new abilities, forge relationships, and positively influence those around you.

What was it?

Recently, I decided to work on a project with some of my batchmates and friends. We planned to construct a treehouse in my backyard. We took our time organising and assembling the necessary supplies and investigating the necessary steps to ensure the treehouse's safety and security.

Together, we cut the lumber, assembled the roof and walls, and painted the treehouse. It was a lot of fun, even though the work was a bit difficult to do in the hot summer days.

Who did you do it with?

My classmates and I worked together on this task. Uniting our diverse talents and abilities to create something truly remarkable was fantastic. We laughed a lot together as we worked, which strengthened our bonds.

How long did it take you to do this?

We finished the project in roughly fifteen days. Even though we mostly worked on it on the weekends in our free time, it required a significant commitment. To ensure we finished within the allotted time, we had to be well-organized and meticulous in our work planning.

Explain why you did it together?

There were various reasons why we chose to collaborate on the project. Primarily, it was an excellent opportunity to bond and deepen our understanding of one another. Second, it was a fantastic opportunity to learn. We all gained new knowledge and abilities that we could not have obtained on our own.

Conclusion

Ultimately, seeing the finished result and realising that we had all contributed to something truly remarkable was a wonderful sense of success.

Overview

Well, doing things collectively gives great pleasure and excitement to people. I personally feel very happy when I do things with someone, especially when planning a surprise.

What was it?

I want to talk about an incident when my brother and I planned a surprise for our grandparents and parents. I clearly remember that last year, on Parent’s Day, I surprised my family to express my love for them.

Who did you do it with?

Since I knew how important it is to work as a team and realised I couldn't do it alone, I decided to do it with my brother. He also had some knowledge of decoration, so I leaned on him for a few things.

How long did it take you to do this?

Fortunately, we were overjoyed that day when our parents were out of town at a local religious event. Given our two hours, I initially believed it would be difficult; still, my brother split the chores equally. Because I was good in the kitchen, I made a cake and some snacks, and my brother assisted me in getting everything I needed, including the decoration-related stuff.

Explain why you did it together?

Since my grandparents enjoy homemade cuisine, I make everything at home. In addition, because my mother was passionate about art, my brother created several ornamental items. Despite our intense hard work, we could finish all the preparations on time because of our cooperation and effort.

Conclusion

When our parents first walked into the house, they were shocked by the decorations, and their enthusiasm was uncontrolled when they spotted the cake in the lobby. They hugged us and thanked us, their eyes welling with tears. My grandparents then cut into the moist cake and showered us with praise. We both smiled broadly and felt content. It was one of the nicest experiences I've ever had, and I really liked it.

IELTS Speaking Part 3 - Follow Up Questions

Question: Do you think neighbours help each other more often in the countryside than in the city?

Answer: People in cities have busy lives. They also face intense competition and greater challenges from rapidly rising prices. Therefore, they are less able to assist their neighbours in their spare time. Furthermore, relationships are less important in the city than they once were, with people's main priorities being showcasing their wealth and gaining attention. Whereas, people in the countryside still take time to spend some time with their neighbours. They believe in working together and consider them as a family.

Question: How do you get along with your neighbours?

Answer: I have known my neighbors for over two decades and have an excellent rapport with them. We spend so much time together at one other's homes that it nearly feels like they are a member of our family. We help one another out in good times and bad. There are moments when I feel our neighbours are more significant in our lives than our other relatives or family members.

Question: How do children learn to cooperate?

Answer: Children learn to collaborate through a combination of direct instruction, role-modeling, and socialisation. For example, playing with other children can help them learn collaboration skills as they practice sharing toys, taking turns, and working together to achieve a common goal.

Question: How do neighbours help each other?

Answer: A few helpful neighbours share the food whenever they make something new or unique. For instance, a neighbour who shares a few veggies can return with a meal of soup made with the vegetables. Also, you might provide them with cash assistance when they need it. Apart from this, people can help in an emergency, like taking them to the hospital.

Question: Do you think parents should teach children to cooperate with others? How?

Answer: Without a doubt, parents play a critical role in helping children develop their social skills. A vital life skill, cooperation is needed in a variety of settings, such as the community, job, school, and home. Since kids imitate their parents, they will acquire these skills when they witness them collaborating and working together in daily activities and relationships. Parents can help their children practice cooperation by organising cooperative games and activities. Children can also be taught the value of compromise, sharing, and listening to the opinions of others by adults.
