Overview

The IELTS speaking test, a crucial component of the exam, evaluates your English language proficiency in a face-to-face, in-person interview. An accredited examiner will administer your 11–14 minute IELTS speaking exam, making it a pivotal part of your IELTS journey.

The second of the three components of the IELTS speaking section is the topics seen on IELTS speaking cue cards. These topics are carefully chosen to reflect real-life situations and discussions. Therefore, you may be asked to talk on any subject.

In this blog, we will guide you through 'Describe an invention that changed people's life,' a popular IELTS speaking cue card topic that is not only interesting but also relevant to the world we live in.

Key Parameters for Scoring in IELTS Speaking Cue Cards

Below are the four major parameters on which candidates will be scored in the IELTS cue card.

  • Fluency and Coherence: Test takers should focus on their ability to put ideas into phrases and talk naturally without stuttering or hesitation. How quickly they speak also matters. Moreover, students are advised to make liberal use of conjunctions, pronouns, and connectors whenever appropriate.

  • Lexical resource: Worth 25% of your score, this criterion evaluates the breadth of your vocabulary. Changing your vocabulary within the right context will help you improve your score. Collocations must be used, and you must refrain from using the same terms repeatedly.

  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: When it comes to English, grammar is the most crucial factor. Mastering the various sentence forms and using caution while using tenses and other grammatical structures is the best approach to ace this. This is where your ability to construct proper phrases is evaluated.

  • Pronunciation: The examiner evaluates individual phonic sounds, intonation, clarity, and sound connecting. Checking if your speech is clearly understood is the aim here. Pronouncing words clearly is essential, and you should focus on emphasising the correct letters and silent sounds.

IELTS Speaking Part 3: Follow-up Questions

Question: Which invention do you think is most useful at home?

Answer: Well, I believe that kitchen appliance inventions are more useful because people work around the clock and generally struggle to cook food. So, with the help of a mixer grinder and blender choppers, they can now easily cook enormous quantities of meals. Apart from this, other household equipment, such as vacuum cleaners and lawnmowers, are also useful.

Question: How has technology made our life easier?

Answer: Life has become more convenient with the advancement of technology, so much so that it is difficult to imagine a world without electronic instruments. We've become reliant on them in some way. We can now see the entire world from the comfort of our own homes. Online meetings on Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, and other similar tools have successfully brought us together under one roof.

Question: What can be done to help old people learn to make use of new technologies?

Answer: We can teach them the fundamentals of computer operation as well as language training and technical jargon. This can help them understand technical terms and handle modern equipment more easily.

Question: Is it more difficult for old people to accept new technologies?

Answer: I believe that change is tough for everyone and that the difficulty grows with age because the amount of time needed to learn new technologies increases with age. Rather than viewing it as an issue, I believe we should work on methods to make it easier for our elders to accept them.

Question: Why have many inventions occurred in the last 100 years?

Answer: People are now literate, more innovative, and their expectations have risen. So, scientists create inventions every time to make this planet habitable so that humans can live comfortably.

Question: Will our life be better if we live without technology?

Answer: I don't believe so because most technology is essential to our daily lives. We couldn't imagine life without them. If a person uses a mobile phone on a daily basis and forgets to bring it to work, he would ponder about the messages or calls on his phone throughout the day, which is the truth. Technologies, on the other hand, have their set of drawbacks. For example, if we don't have a phone, we'll be thinking about different issues, such as nature or the environment, which I believe can increase our mental satisfaction.
